Kelly and Khameo invite you to join them as we reintroduce The Florida Chautauqua Young Readers Program at The Florida Chautauqua in downtown DeFuniak Springs.  All young readers, ages 8 and up, are invited to join this exciting program.  Participants will meet twice a month, on Thursday afternoons at 4: OO PM in our rehearsal hall, 840 Baldwin Avenue.  Readers will discuss selected books, participate in a book related activity and enjoy a book themed snack.  Participation fee is $10 per month, March 28-May 23, with each participant providing their own book.   The first book selection will be, “The Phantom Tollbooth” by Norton Juster.  Pre-registration is required to secure a seat.  Please contact Kelly Powell Goff at: [email protected]  Deadline for registering is March 25. 

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Kelly is a 35 year old graduate of University of Florida with a degree in English and Religious Studies. Her hobbies include baking, painting, and knitting. 

Her daughter, Khameo, is a 9 year old 3rd grader at West DeFuniak Elementary. She loves cats, llamas, arts and crafts, nature walks, and dance. They both, of course, love the theater!  Kelly participated in our theatre as a young child and her children now continue the tradition.

Happy Fall Y’all!  We are excited to announce the project for Pigment this month. Sticking with the theme of all things “pumpkin spice” we will be painting a fall canvas with a pumpkin. This versatile masterpiece can hang on a wall, be layered on a shelf with decorations or hung on your front door with a wreath. Glenda the Good Witch invites you to “Come out, come out, where ever you are and meet the young lady who fell from a star…..” at the Florida Chautauqua Theater in Downtown DeFuniak Springs.  Journey down the yellow brick road when the curtain opens THIS Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, May 20 at 2:30 PM for the “Wizard of Oz”. Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $12.00 for students,18 and under. Call 892-9494 for information. Tickets are available at the box office.  Box office opens 45 minutes prior to curtain.

The first costume and tech rehearsal for our upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz” is in the books!  Believe us when we say, ‘it takes an army to produce a show” and we are thankful to have an outstanding “army” of VOLUNTEERS. Connie Jones, our costume/wardrobe mistress, brings the characters to life with her talents as a designer and seamstress.  Dress rehearsal means, fittings, pinning and adjustments.  She and her assistants, help performers dress and make the first round of adjustments towards a final fitting.  In other areas, volunteers are busy applying makeup and determining what will work best for each character. Another team is supervising children, ensuring that they move from the rehearsal hall to the stage at the proper time safely, rain or shine. The backstage, and the  lighting and sound crew, get instructions for moving set pieces and props, as well as cues for lighting and sound.  Roy Dillon has spent countless hours building set pieces and is on hand to lend advice on moving and operating those pieces. Pianist Keitha Bledsole, warms up and prepares for her part in the live music portions of the show. and assistant to the director, Pam Dillon, gives last minute calls and instructions to the volunteers. ALL of this takes place under the watchful eye and instructions of our wonderful director Beth Campbell-Work. The entire process will be repeated four times a week for the next few weeks. Finally, on May 18 at 7:00 PM, the curtain will open for the first performance and our young performers will speak, sing and dance their hearts out for YOU!  Please mark your calendars on May 18 and 19 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, May 20 at 2:30 PM. Students spend countless hours together in rehearsals for productions at our theater. They memorize lines and blocking for the shows, and practice lyrics and notes for solos, ensembles and choral pieces. Spending time together creates a polished show and allows the participants to form lasting friendships.
